“Tolo Loch” is the debut album by Mushamukas Ensamble de Contrabajos, featuring commissioned works by Mexican composers. The album’s title is derived from the Mayan words tolo and loch, meaning “Embraced Bull,” which together refer to the tololoche—a traditional Mexican instrument. Although distinct from the double bass, the tololoche holds an iconic place in Mexican music, contributing to genres like sones huastecos, jarochos, and Norteño music.

This album serves not only as a celebration of Mexican culture but also as an exploration of the cultural and historical ties between the tololoche and the double bass. Eight Mexican composers and one Spanish composer contributed works that recreate Mexico’s cultural landscape through the sound of a double bass ensemble. The project highlights the past, present, and future of Mexican culture, while also fostering a cultural exchange between Mexico and Spain, reflecting the deep historical influences between these regions.

“Mushamukas – what a wonderful surprise from Mexico! Rodrigo Mata and his group venture straight into the first league of the international double bass community. Nine highly developed compositions in profound and delicate interpretations: Intonation, rhythm, color, melody, groove and extended techniques in perfect harmony. Beautiful music – a CD definitely not only for Bass lovers!”
